The Relationships between Subjective Aging and Health Dimensions in Later Life
Han Ji-Na

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine cross-sectionally and longitudinally the relationships of self-perceptions of aging and age identity with different health dimensions among Korean older people. Furthermore this study tested the interaction effects of self-perceptions of aging and age identity on health. Data for this study came from two waves (2008 & 2011) of Survey of Living Conditions of Korean Older Persons. Multiple regression and multivariate regression models were tested using Mplus with a nationally representative sample of 8,270 community-dwelling older persons aged 65 and above in 2008. In the cross-sectional study, self-perceptions of aging and age identity were significantly related to depressive symptoms, self-rated health, and chronic illnesses. The interaction effects were significant for depressive symptoms and functional limitations. Longitudinally the interaction effects were not significant at all health dimensions and the main effects of self-perceptions of aging and age identity were only significant for chronic illnesses. Based on the results, the implications for social work practice and research were discussed.
